How to paint shabby chic style furniture?

I want to paint the mahogany furniture that belonged to my mother, in the shabby chic style. I am very I completely lose shy as furniture that can not afford to replace it, I wondered if someone could give me tips or advice on achieving this type of finish or point me in the direction of some useful websites. Also, if you tell me what type of material (types of brushes, etc.) you used, and especially what the shade of the paint of your choice! Thanks:)
